After the Bhopal, India tragedy in December of 1984, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) formed their Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) in March of 1985. One important charter activity of CCPS was to improve process safety education in the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum.
In 1985, as a result of a summer experience in a chemical plant, Dr. Crowl became aware of the importance of process safety to all industrial operations, the rich fundamental basis of process safety, and that process safety education must be a part of the chemical engineering curriculum.
This lecture will describe the activities of AIChE/CCPS and Dr. Crowl’s efforts to improve process safety education for chemical engineers worldwide. An assessment of the current status and future of process safety education will be provided.
This is a presentation of ConocoPhillips and Oklahoma State University School of Chemical Engineering
